The main issue between couples is communication - maybe you've stopped listening to each other or there is a painful issue between you that you can't move past. I help create a safe space where both partners can express their emotions. It's important to understand that we can only change ourselves, not our partner. Although simple, this can be the most difficult thing to achieve when we live with someone - it's much easier to blame our partner rather than looking at what we can do or change. Again I have various interventions to help couples improve how they can communicate and if arguing is a feature, various strategies to help ensure communication remains safe. As a trained psychosexual therapist I am also able to deal with any sexual issues that may have arisen in the relationship.

Is it just the same as individual therapy?

Couples therapy differs from individual therapy in many ways - not only are 2 people involved but their relationship is the 'client' in the room. On that basis I am not a referee, nor will I take sides. Instead I will help you both start to listen and communicate to each other with respect and understanding.

How can counselling help us?

Sometimes it can be difficult to hear each other - maybe you've got stuck in a cycle of arguing and no longer are listening to what the other is saying. Or maybe there is a sensitive issue you want to talk about but don't know how to begin. Having a third person in the room can help create a safe space, where boundaries can be agreed and adhered to.
